Extradition is a mechanism that allows one State to hand over a person to another for trial, or to serve a sentence.

There are two types of extraditions: active, when it is Spain that requires another country to surrender someone; and passive, when Spain is asked to send someone who is in Spanish territory. Extradition can be denied for various reasons, for example when the person is or has been on trial in Spain for the same act.
